Association of Academic Health Centers
The Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC) is a non-profit organization that seeks to advance the nation's health and well-being through vigorous leadership of the nation's academic health centers. AAHC’s mission is to improve the nation's health care system by mobilizing and enhancing the strengths and resources of the academic health care enterprise in health professions, education, patient care, and research.
AAHC’s Social Determinants of Health Initiative
An individual’s health prospects are shaped by a variety of factors beyond what has been inherited (genetics) and the medical care that is received. These other factors are called the social determinants of health and include an individual’s social circumstances, environment, and behavioral patterns. While academic health centers have traditionally focused on medical care, and are working hard to learn more about genetics in health and disease, there is increasing interest in broadening their approach to more directly address the social determinants of health. The AAHC is engaging member institutions to further develop approaches to individual and population health that include these underlying social determinants.
Board Resolution Passed March 2012
The AAHC Board of Directors endorses AAHC’s commitment to advancing the focus of our member institutions on the social determinants of health. Because the social determinants of health play such an important role in overall health and well-being, the Board supports AAHC’s efforts to enhance the ability of academic health centers to respond to these critical factors in their education, research, and clinical programs.
